Nerd with no cell phone skills, need help simply getting SMS messages locally.

Hi guys, I have a low-rate data free plan.

I made a quick post the other day and was instructed a bit about iMessaging and how that may be the culprit as to why I am not receiving SMS messages anywhere but in my network region. I followed all instructions, my spouse is using Bell but has iMessaging turned off as well. I am still not receiving messages from her when I am out of the house. I am getting pretty frustrated. I say ‘nerd’ because I am decent at figuring out electronics, and if not - Goggling and figuring out.

I feel I am paying for a completely useless device in my pocket. I may need a serious walk-through as to how to simply get messages. Regular old messages.

I am Koodo (Obviously). The main person I care about is my spouse and she is Bell, if that matters at all.
I would love to know that I am also able to get messages from simply everyone. Carrier should not matter.

This has been on-going since I’ve switched to Koodo. I am just about ready to run fast and far from Koodo unfortunately.

Thanks!
Shane

It looks like IPhone to IPhone will default to IMessage unless you check it entirely off. It definitely is a bother when you’re on a no data plan. Apple seems to be going with expecting anyone who gets an iphone and messages to have at least some data.

Do let us know if it works or not.

Did you port your number to Koodo from your previous provider?

Does calling (incoming and out going) and cellular data work?  Does outgoing SMS work?

When you check your port status in Koodo self serve does it say complete?

Have you restarted your phone?

WEll, this is a tough one. I reviewed the other post. As the rep explained, it’s a bit of an automatic thing iphone-iphone. You mean even when your wife selects “send as sms” and you have imessage off, you still don’t get it?

Ported from previous, yes.
Calling works. No data on this plan. Never tried. I could/would turn it on to simply check for the sake of fixing this mess however. And as far as outgoing SMS, I honestly don’t know. I don’t get out much as I am disabled, and without “receiving” the incoming messages, I dont message a heck of a lot.

I will check port status now, and yes I’ve restarted many times. Thanks a million Dennis.

Thanks for joining Goran. Sorry for being such a tough guy. lol.

I’m not positive she chooses “send as sms”, and was unaware of that option. I am however positive she is turning off iMessage, so I would imagine SMS is the only other viable option and that it was default to that?

Sorry for not being the best at cell phones - I don’t get out and about much, so I’ve not had one before.

Yes please check the port status.

And with imessage off, please try sending an SMS to your spouse or whoever you want to test this with, and see if they receive it.

Since calling works, you can call to confirm the SMS texting works

Ok guys, I must apologize but when I instructed my fiance to please turn off iMessage when she messaged me while I was out….she did not follow instructions, and left iMessage on. She and I both apologize, this is likely a pointless conversation we’re having here.

She is on her way out as we speak, I have asked her to turn off iMessage and message me, once she reaches her destination…..I have a feeling all will be well.

Thanks for the help, and we apologize for the mixup. I was unaware until seconds ago that she ignored my “please turn off iMessage” instructions earlier today.

I doubt I’ll be back for help in this thread, and doubt I’ll be running from Koodo.

1 quick last one though, if I may…..does this mean that ANYONE with iMessaging turned on (Most people with iPhones) Must turn off iMessaging to message me? That’s a bit of a bother, no?
