Actvating a new pre-paid sim

Been trying to active my sim but I’m stuck on the payment stage.

Am I only able to pay with a US or Canadian credit/debit card? I’m trying to pay with an Australian visa debit card (the card definitely works, and I’ve tried two different ones).

Note: Only a credit or Visa Debit card registered to a Canadian/U.S. address can be registered to your account. Other International credit/Visa Debit cards are not accepted.

I assumed this was only meant for automatic top-ups? If not.. that really puts me in a catch-22 of neither being able to open a bank account nor get a phone number.

Yeah sadly you need a Canadian credit card both to register and to top up. However not all is lost, you can buy vouchers to tie you over until you get a Canadian card...

There are certain websites where you can buy prepaid top-up vouchers. I can’t guarantee whether it is legit or not, but you can try at your own risk. Personally I would suggest you to go to one of the stores listed on the Koodo website.

Here are some of the websites (in no particular order):
