Hi there,
If you really need to turn it off, you will only be charged if you send a text message, make a call, answer a call, or use data. You can recieve text messages for free as long as it doesn't require data to do so such as using iMessage or RCS chat would charge you. So if you follow that, you will be fine.
To play it safe, make sure to immedietly turn off your data if you turn off airplane mode to avoid potential small data leakage that may cause a charge. 🙂👍
