Strange behaviour with 5G standalone

Currently have a fascinating issue with 5G standalone and a Xiaomi 17t. LTE advanced and NSA 5G work perfectly but with 5G SA the phone is only connecting on one band at a time and locking to it, so going into buildings it will not happily switch between low and high bands unless airplane mode is cycled. Now the weird part, if I delete the esim and restore it, 5G SA will work perfectly with full carrier aggregation and happily switch between bands, but once the phone is power cycled it will only connect on one band at a time. Its not a hardware issue but a network oddity. I know the telus network has had 5G SA with carrier aggregation for a couple years now but koodo has only recently enabled it so perhaps related. No reps have been able to answer with many not knowing the difference between 5G SA and NSA.

Koodo doesn't document anything specific about 5G standalone in its help pages. What's official is that all plans run on the 5G and 4G LTE networks, and the speed you get depends on the speed experience included in your plan, https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/data-speeds

The 17t isn't a phone Koodo or Telus sells here so it isn't running Koodo firmware or the KDO carrier code, and on SA the band and aggregation handling sits with the device. From your description the phone seems to only renegotiate its SA capabilities when the eSIM profile re-registers, which would explain why it survives a re-add but not a reboot.

Have you tried a 3rd party app like LTE Discovery to compare which bands come up after a reboot vs right after re-adding the eSIM? As well, does the Xiaomi network settings let you prefer NSA over SA?

The phone should be negotiating what its capable of, which is why LTE advanced works. I believe its being limited by the network once it does not recognize the imei in its database but for whatever reason its not right away? I have been using netmonster to confirm it sees the same bands but does not connect the same. I am able to toggle SA and NSA.

That’s a tricky situation since the issue occurred on a device that isn’t officially supported by Koodo’s technical team. Have you checked with Xiaomi to see if they have any suggestions, especially issues related to their firmware?
