Question

Internet Throttling?

Just Wondering if anyone else is experiencing internet throttling?

I currently have 500 dl speed,

to give a bit of background, my current set up is a Eero Pro mesh system, using an 8 Port Netgear unmanaged switch, and I have about 15 devices online as I do have a home automation system as well .

when I was with my old ISP I had 100/30 internet with no issues, and I had also replaced the cable in my house prior to instal.

The issue here is that while on wifi I get about 200 at max download speed witch is fine and normal, but on the router side if I speedtest via the Eero app I get 500 (wired). So my devices that are wired, some get 500 down when I test and some get like 24dl.

I know it varies by device but I never had these issues with the other ISP, is anyone else having a similar issue?

Is my only option to return to my old ISP?

Did this help you find an answer to your question?

If some are getting 500 and some are getting 24, it sounds more like a device issue than an internet issue but there could be something else going on.

Have you tried plugging in those devices that are getting lower speeds, directly into the koodo router and see if you still get the same lower speeds?

Yes, I have taken every step possible to rectify the issue, I also work in tech, so I have also tried swapping network components to test but same result. It's only certain devices that has this issue and they are both wired devices.  I have only been with Koodo internet for less than a month and have noticed a masive decline in service, im not sure why

One example is I am watching hockey on my brand new Apple TV that ive had for 6 months, using the sports net app. I have to run a VPN just so it doesn't buffer and I shouldn't have to do that.

If VPN is used, it will always slowed thing down unless you have a close VPN server and your server speed was extremely fast.

If possible, I would try to change the DNS of the modem. Sometimes, ISP’s DNS was the culprit of slowing thing down.

I think that you misunderstood what I was explaining.

My speed with a VPN is better than when I am not using a VPN, therefore I believe that something else entirely is going on.  I have also changed dns a couple times with no success.

That was the first time I heard that VPN can speed up your internet test. The only reason I could think of is your normal setup or firewall has something blocking up your internet data. Your VPN, for whatever reason, can bypass that.

I would suggest you to reset the modem and router to its default factory settings and use direct LAN connection to run speedtest (avoid the Eero Pro when testing please)

Some things get throttled but I cannot speak to what Koodo directly does, if it does any at all. Getting a faster speed with a vpn does typically imply either a throttling based on data type situation, which I don’t think is the case given it seems to be device dependent, or some sort of firewall issue.

Based on specific internet services/apps, I noticed that Koodo cellular data, Rogers home internet, and Telus home internet throttles that service during specific times of the day.  Completely in violation of net neutrality presented in the Telecommunications Act
