Question

Banking verification code leaves busy signal and voicemail afterward

Suddenly I can’t log into online banking because the verification codes I keep trying to get won’t come though. My phone rings (wireless home phone hub), I answer and always get a busy signal. After this, I get a voicemail which is from the bank (the automated voice I’m supposed to be hearing telling me to press 1 so as to hear the code I’m looking for). After several attempts, this keeps happening.

Should I be waiting for a network glitch to go away, or might there be some separate issue I need to address? I’ve never had this problem before. This phone hub is newer than my previous one (upgraded 3G to 4G LTE some weeks ago) and this is the first time I’m having to have a verification code sent through it. Yes, I have Call Control active but the phone number my financial institution uses is whitelisted and has been for a long time.

Hmm, that’s odd. Can you receive regular calls? It’s just the bank call that doesn’t get through?

Can you try to turn off call control fully and try again?

I’ve just called my own number from another phone and it worked fine. So far, it’s just banking ~

I’ve just tried that, same result.

What happens when you call the bank’s 1800 number and press the numbers to go through the IVR menus?

I’ve called it and wandered through a couple of option strings, that’s working fine.

Have you tried moving your wireless phone hub to another location? Based on the user guide, you may want to wait for 1-2 minutes after you restart the device.

I’ve moved it, waited a while after it was moved to turn it back on and waited several minutes after that, same result.

So these are verification codes sent by direct phone call and vocalized for you to use? Is just this your preferred method of multi-factor authentication or the bank’s only method? Seems like SMS to your cellphone would be a more practical option in general if available.

Yes. I don’t have a cell phone to use for texting, everything is through this landline-like setup. Every 90 days I have to input a new code assuming I haven’t changed which PC I log into and am not deleting too much browsing history or else logging into another service (taxes and such) triggering a new code. Maybe I should just wait and see if it resolves itself, banking in-person for now. For me to go and get a cell phone plan just so I can get the odd code seems a bit much.

P.S: As I understand it, it is my bank’s only method, though I could try to call them and see if anything else can be done. Surely it’s because of the new hubs in the first place, something happening over the network where Koodo is not allowing a call of this type to flow in properly?

A minute ago I called my bank’s 1-800 number looking to reach an agent and discuss the issue. After waiting in queue and the phone ringing less than one full time, suddenly a busy signal took over. Could this be an issue with my handset? Everything outside banking, though, has been working so far. My handset is an AT&T ML17929 2-Line.

Often, but not always, email to receive codes is also an option. Maybe your bank can allow that as well.

I can’t imagine any telephone at this point being an issue for receiving an automated call. You could certainly try swapping with another one, but I don’t think that’s the issue.

I know there used to be, and potentially can still be issues with apartment buzzer calls for the wireless home phone services, but this is pretty new to me. You don’t have Koodo Call Control enabled now by any chance, do you? Did you recently get a newer phone hub that supports VoLTE?

It’s possible that, if you unplugged everything and removed the battery for a few minutes, plugged it all back in, and you still have the issue and there’s no Call Control enabled, then you might need to get  a Koodo rep to reset something to reprovision the service.

Call control was enabled again, yes. I have no idea if my hub is using VoLTE, it’s the WF723CA 4G LTE. I’ve read about some people having orange bars show on their hub meaning a call is dropping to 3G; I haven’t had that issue at all. I’ve now tried unplugging, etc. as you’ve written out and the same problem persists. Using my dad’s phone to call the bank’s 1-800 number (also using the exact same kind of hub I am, upgraded the same way at the same time), the automated system asked me (at first) to key in my entire card number instead of the last 4 digits only that it asked me for every time on my phone. Maybe that’s a clue(?)

After reaching an agent and getting through security verification, I’m getting a script read off to me over and over again. Since this is a problem they are not used to seeing or knowing about, and they’ve tried whatever fixes on their end over the phone, I’m supposed to run to my branch and “verify more information” in order to proceed further. When I asked what information was to be verified, or why I couldn’t just have codes sent to email or else use security questions the way it used to be, I had a script read off to me again along with “Oh don’t worry, they’ll fix it for you.” “How?” *script read off again* Well, that was useless.

They also tried to call me on my phone again while I was chatting with an agent on my Dad’s; when I answered it, it went to a busy signal. Apparently, this was for “further verification”. Anyway, maybe a Koodo rep is the answer so I can just get this working again. Perhaps there’s some issue over the Koodo network with calls being blocked because of automation. I’m not advanced enough to know, but I need to be able to pay bills and so forth online and walking kilometers away to do something as simple as moving money from one account to another is on the ridiculous side.

So… how do I contact a Koodo rep to fix this issue? Koodo Assist was not helpful and I’m not finding options anywhere to contact anyone except at Telus.

If Call Control is enabled, you’ll need to add the Bank’s MFA phone number to your white list so it can go through. You can add 25 authorized users to skip the call control and the steps are here:

https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/call-control?srsltid=AfmBOoqunzDN5jPj-DUcuNTUP4so4axAn22ngmOn467MX3z9QPGmbS2Y

If that still doesn’t fix it, then I would suggest a callback for further assistance. You would request this in Koodo Assist. Basically you just ask for callback. Sometimes certain key words are needed to get to it. But often it should just allow going to it when you specify you need help with it not working.

Yes, their number is already on my Whitelist. I’ll try the callback option.
