Hi Team,

I am currently outside of Canada and my phone got lost during a car trip.  I need the full procedure to deactivate my current physical sim card and also to re-activate an eSIM remotely with the same number.

I’ts hard for me to come canada right away as I left recently. I would appreciate all the info i can get.

Thanks in advance

Hi there,

So if you switch to an esim, this will deactivate the physical sim card and your number and plan will switch to the esim.

Where you no longer have the physical sim, you wont be able to convert to an esim without an esim voucher. Do you have someone in canada who can pick one up from a koodo or telus store?

They're commonly $10 plus tax. Once they do, if they send you a picture of the front and back, you can follow the steps below to switch to the esim.

Start by logging into your Koodo self-serve account at koodomobile.com to suspend your physical SIM. Just go to the Manage SIM or SIM swap section and select suspend or report lost. This stops your service immediately on the old SIM.

For eSIM activation while you are outside Canada, request an eSIM in self-serve under Get eSIM or Replace SIM for the same number. Make sure your device is eSIM compatible and unlocked. Koodo will email you a QR code, so check your spam folder if you do not see it. On your new phone, go to Settings, then Cellular or Mobile Data, select Add eSIM, and scan the QR code. Your phone will restart and activate.

Thanks Robert and Oliver for your help.

I did recover my iPhone but without the physical card. I also managed to get an esim voucher from a friend in Canada.  I did activate the esim on the iPhone and it says Activating … I did not report the phone as stolen or lost so I am going by your advise that activating the new esim will deactivate the physical sim card and your number and plan will switch to the esim.

How long should i wait until the sim is activated.

Thanks again for your help

Nice, that’s awesome that you were able to recover the device.

The activating eSim step should only take around 5-15 minutes. During this time, make sure you’re connected to a good WiFi connection so that the device can download the esim profile. If you don’t have WiFi, you will be stuck in the activation loop.

If it has been longer than say half an hour, you can do things like restarting the device, turning airplane mode on and off, or by resetting the network settings to prompt the device to retrieve the esim info.

whoops I saw this after sending my last post. To confirm, after you got the eSim voucher, did you update your sim in self serve first? If you didn’t, you can do so by following the steps below. Once you do, the eSim should be active and you should be able to scan and add the eSim.

ah I see! Yes please do. By switching the sim in self serve, this will deactivate the physical sim and transfer the service to the voucher as I mentioned before. Feel free to follow the steps in the link I shared above.

Once the sim change is complete, you should be able to add the eSim. 😎

That’s perfect Oliver i just activated it on self serve

You can now put your SIM in your phone. It may take up to 15 minutes to activate.

i am updating my iOS software once its done i will re-scan the new esim and it should work and i will confirm here.  I really appreciate the help

Oliver good morning i have great news my eSIM is now activated.

However i noticed even when my phone is on airplane mode I keep getting these expensive 16 dollars Voice mail charges even when I don’t open the voice mail inbox. Everyone who calls me and leaves a message even when I am on airplane mode and roaming will charge 16 dollars to my usage as ER/VC.

I need your help to disable voice mail feature completely from my phone and line.  Its iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Thanks so much.

Awesome, I am glad the esim worked 😎

That sounds like you have the “Live voicemail” feature turned on. This is an iPhone feature that will check your voicemail and then convert it into a message that shows on the phone. The problem with this is it will trigger the easy roam charge.

Can you check and see if this is active? If it is, you can turn it off by  doing the following: Settings > Apps > Phone > Live Voicemail
