Is Koodo phone compatibility the same for Prepaid and Postpaid?

I’m currently a Speakout Mobile user, but planning to migrate to Koodo prepaid 360-day plan, $100, just talk and text, no data. My phone is a Umidigi A11, and it supports the bands used by Koodo/Telus, as well as 4G VoLTE.  When I do the Koodo/Telus IMEI test, it says that my phone is not compatible. However, if I insert my partner’s Koodo post-paid SIM, it works just fine, and I can talk and text, and I get 4G VoLTE indicators at the top of my screen. So, the Koodo/Telus IMEI test isn’t quite right, and that could be because Telus has never evaluated my phone make and model.

So, are the phone compatibility requirements different for post-paid and prepaid? There is nothing on the Koodo or Telus web site to suggest that. I know that my phone works with Koodo post-paid, so if the compatibility requirements are the same, then my phone should work with Koodo prepaid, even though it fails the IMEI test.

Postpaid and prepaid use the same networks.

So if you put your partner’s sim in your phone and it works, then it should work.

Officially, Koodo does not support VoLTE for unsupported phones but if it works in your test then that’s great.  Just dont be surprised if VoLTE stops working

Thanks for that clarification, Dennis. This is what I suspected. In the past few weeks I have been using the IMEI checkers for various carriers, and I think their reliability is “iffy” if your phone is not one of the popular iPhone or Samsung models. There are a great many phones manufactured which will have the bands and 4G VoLTE that Koodo and Telus say is required, but Koodo/Telus cannot possibly evaluate every phone model out there. So, if your phone is not on their lookup list, their default answer is probably “not compatible”, instead of “Your phone is not on our list, so we don’t know. if it will work.” Testing with a borrowed activated SIM for the plan you want is the best way.

Many changes have been made since the implementation of the IMEI checker, so it will not be necessarily accurate. There are also constant ongoing improvements to the 4G and 5G services due to the eventual shutdown of the 3G network.

Telus and Koodo have removed restrictions to ensure that most devices are able to access VoLTE on the network, so it is not exactly the best source to rely on. As long as it works with your device, you are good to go.
