As a visitor to Canada can I obtain an eSIM and a prepaid data and calls plan?

The Koodo website suggests that you can get an eSIM when signing up for a prepaid plan, but it also says that the payment for this has to be linked to a Canadian address and therefore I assume that my UK registered credit card would not be accepted.

Is my only option to find a physical SIM card in store and sign up for a prepaid plan that way?

I will be travelling in Canada for around 40 days and I want calls plus data.

Thanks

That is correct.  It will likely not be accepted.

When you are in Canada, you will need to purchase top up vouchers in-store or you can use a 3rd party site to purchase the top up voucher.  You can also use a canadian prepaid credit card.

This would be the same with Public Mobile (Koodo’s sister company).

Thanks Dennis. I am just surprised that Koodo (or any other Canadian company) won't accept payments from international customers. I can get a prepaid eSIM from other online suppliers but the Koodo package seems to offer the best value.  I will have to visit a Telus/Koodo store in Vancouver to sign up.

The reason for this is due to fraud.

However, I agree that with the proliferation of travel esim services, it would be a huge missed opportunity for Koodo to continue this practice.

I’ve also flagged a rep to this post regarding this opportunity

If I am not mistaken, you can opt for an eSIM and purchase the prepaid top-up voucher from a third-party website before your arrival.

Koodo does highly recommend that you buy the vouchers from certain locations, but you can consider this option if you plan to use an international credit card. It is important to note that this method is not endorsed by Koodo, so I would suggest you to use it at your discretion.

I have listed out a few options for you, in no particular order, to top up your prepaid account.

Many thanks. My current plan is to try to get to a Telus/Koodo store when I get to Vancouver in a couple of weeks and purchase the vouchers and install the eSIM there - to, hopefully, eliminate the risk of something not working. Also, if my UK credit card is not acceptable and therefore I can't sign up for automatic roll-over at the end of the first 30 day prepaid period, I need to find out how to renew the plan. I am guessing I will need to buy more vouchers to use on day 31 to extend the contract or even to have to start again with a new SIM.

But it's very helpful to know where I can get vouchers online in case I don't have time (or can't find) to get to a store.

I appreciate your help.

You have 89 days after top-up is required before the sim card is cancelled.Worst case would be topping up with vouchers. you definitely wouldn’t require getting a new sim card each time.
