@cdnrrb Here is what I suggest...worked well while my sister was in Peru for 3 months.  She told us that most of the time she would be on wi-fi only. She put her phone on airplane mode to avoid accidental roaming charges. She was able to stay in touch anyone who knew how to use whatsapp (good for calls too) , facebook or any other way to connect. Then once a week (she shared with us what day would be best) she used her easy roam to catch up with those who could only use regular voice calls. $13 for 24 hour period. Was well worth it.

You really can’t… unless you are willing to give up your Koodo plan and port your number to a VOIP service. Then you can forward your number and have a local SIM card + number in Ecuador.

When you come back to Canada you can port your number back to a cell service. It’s probably the most cost effective method to keep your number and be able to use it abroad!

While in Ecuador, I suggest looking at prepaid options : https://prepaid-data-sim-card.fandom.com/wiki/Prepaid_SIM_with_data

You can use Easy Roam.

It's $13/day to use your plan. It is capped at $150 per billing cycle. Which means after 12 days of roaming in your billing cycle, the other days with that cycle are free roaming.

For future reference. It's best to start your own thread instead of commenting on an old thread.

What do you want to do? You can just not roam if you don't want to. You could do pay per use if you just want to send out the odd text or have very short calls. Easy roam is 9 dollars per 24 hour period in the US up to 100 dollars per billing cycle. If you don't make or receive a call, don't send a sms, and don't use cellular data, you won't get charged anything. You could turn on airplane mode and then turn on WiFi which keeps everything else shut down.
