Switching from PM to Koodo for UK trip?

I was a Koodo customer a few years ago, but am currently on Public Mobile, with a $35 Can/US/Mex 100GB plan (much more data than I actually need).  I’m going to be vacationing in the UK in September, and PM has no roaming ability.  One option would be to get a UK SIM voice/data for the visit, but I’d have to ensure no critical banking or other service would try to do SMS 2FA to me, and other small annoyances.

The other option would be to switch back to Koodo,, as PM is actually always imploring me to do, to get access to Travel Pass roaming..  It looks like I can get a promo switch rate to a 150GB Can/US/Mex Koodo plan for $40/month.  It seems a shame to pay $60/year for more data I don’t need, but on the plus side I’d get WiFi calling, which PM doesn’t offer, might be a useful backup here in cottage country.  Just wanted to ask if I’m right on Koodo for this these days:

  1. It looks like Koodo uses multiple carriers in the UK, on a “strongest signal” basis?  That would be good, as part of my time will be in the Scottish Highlands.
  2. Roaming in the UK doesn’t support calls to toll-free numbers?  I’d have to make sure I had actual phone numbers for banks/airlines/etc that I might need to get in touch with?  Even UK local toll-free numbers aren’t covered?  That would have been a real pain back in the old days before everything was booked on the internet.
  3. WiFi calling only works when physically located in Canada, won’t work in UK?
  4. As well as airplane mode, I should turn off data roaming until I land and send the text to start the  Travel Pass, to avoid potentially triggering the daily roaming fee first?  Or is Koodo smart enough to avoid that gotcha in the billing?  If I am going to have extra days in the 14-day travel pass, I could also send the text before I take off.
  5. Free perk changes still take effect at the start of the next billing cycle?  Is there a way to specify the 3-day International EasyRoam perk when switching, as I would be going to the UK before the second billing period.

If I’m getting anything wrong or there are other options, please let me know.

Hi

1.Koodo used to publish their UK partner list but I couldn’t find it anymore. Telus/Koodo normally have partners with major carriers so you should be good with signal part. You won't be charged extra as long as the phone connects to a roaming partner network.

2. You're right on toll free, those aren't included in Easy Roam and that's what usually catches people. I would get direct dial numbers for your bank and airline before you go. Only calls to Canada and local numbers in the country you're in are included, anything else is billed at international rate https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/traveling-with-your-canada-us-rate-plan

3.Koodo WiFi Calling doesn’t work when you are traveling outside of Canada

4.Data roaming is the opposite of what you wrote. If the travel pass is active you need to leave data roaming ON, otherwise you can't use data over there.

5.You can add the perk at the time of activation. It should apply to the first billing cycle, which doesn’t start immediately but a few days afterward.

If you are getting the 14 or 30 day Euro travel pass, I highly recommend you text the code get it 1 week before you need it.  You are only charged and trigger day 1 of the travel pass once you start roaming by sending an sms, using data, or using cellular talk.  So if you cancel your trip, you are not charged.

Also note that texting the code is a safer bet than adding it within self serve as there have been reports of issues when trying to add it directly within self serve.

Be careful with the 3-day Easy Roam perk.  The perk is not sequentially stackable with a travel pass.  If you use this perk, then additional roaming can either only be charged at the Daily Easy Roam rate or pay per use roaming.

If you need wi-fi calling, you would be better off switching over to Freedom Mobile, Rogers, or Fido, since they allow you to use this feature even outside of Canada.

You may want to wait for some upcoming back-to-school offers before choosing to proceed with Koodo. If you are within the coverage area, Freedom Mobile provides monthly plans with roaming in over 120 destinations, as well as 30-day roaming passes.
