So I have a plan that only allows me to text within Canada only and I was wondering if I was using like rcs would that change it so I can text into like say USA or would I still get charged per text that I send with rcs?

You should also be able to disable send as SMS/MMS when RCS fails in your messaging app’s RCS settings.

Hi there,

so RCS chat works the same as iMessage in the sense that the messages are sent over a WiFi or data connection as opposed to usual SMS. So in practice, you should not be charged for messaging someone using RCS chat if they’re in another country and also using RCS chat to communicate.

However, there is a risk that if for some reason you’re unable to send a message via RCS chat or the other person can’t receive using it and the message changes to SMS, you will be changed the standard international rates.

I would suggest not risking it as I have had it happen many times where RCS chat just disconnects for a bit and reverts to SMS. There are also many free alternatives already such as WhatsApp and Facebook messenger that don’t carry the risk of being charged if you don’t want to change to the unlimited international SMS perk. 🙂👍
