pay per use travel

HI

If I turn off data for the Koodo line on my iPhone and have no data roaming package paid for on Koodo can I be assured I will be charged only when actually using voice or text?

if I pay for call forwarding are texts also forwarded?
The faq says to turn on airplane mode, clearly a non-starter, but I know my wife kept getting daily charges until she did that and it was like $16 per day and she didn’t even use the phone.

i travel for long periods, I have an international SIM for data and a tcp/ip phone number app.
Occasionally I do need to answer an incoming call or receive those infernal dual factor texts, that’s all I need Koodo for when out of country but I do need a way to keep in touch with that number

So easy roam and pay per use roaming is charged whenever you use any data, use any calling and send any texts.

I suggest Turing off roaming data and cellular data if you are worried about accidental data usage causing roaming charges.

Also note that restarting your phone may trigger some data use in some phones due to some devices connecting to the network prior to the settings applying during the boot up process

Airplane mode isn't required. Sometimes, you need is both cellular data and data roaming off, not just data roaming, that's the part that catches most people.

Answering an incoming call does trigger the Easy Roam day rate though, so any day you pick up you're paying for that day.

Two things that likely explain your wife's daily charges. Checking voicemail counts as a call, even tapping the notification shortcut. And on iPhone, Send as SMS in Settings > Apps > Messages needs to be off, otherwise an iMessage that fails over wifi silently falls back to a regular text and starts the roaming day.

Call forwarding only forwards calls, not texts, and Koodo can only forward to a +1 number. There is no SMS forwarding service.

If you turn off Easy Roam, you will be charged Pay Per Use rates.  Note that these are very expensive if you let it get out of hand.
