Is it possible to swap phone numbers between monthly and prepaid lines?

I run a small business and the number of clients that have my personal phone number is getting out of control. I would like to get a new phone number for my personal line and use my existing phone number for a prepaid plan. Is this possible?

Hopefully this makes sense:

  • I am currently on a monthly, postpaid plan with Koodo - let’s call this phone number A.
  • I would like to get a second, prepaid plan using Phone Number A.
  • I would like to keep my existing monthly plan using a NEW phone number.

If I sign up for a prepaid plan, is it possible to swap numbers between the two lines?

Hi there,

I agree with Dennis. You first would need to add a new line to the postpaid account with a new number (line B), then create a prepaid account with a new temp number, then if everything is working, port line A from your postpaid over to the prepaid.

It is important in doing it in this order bexause if you were to just port Line A over without adding an extra line first, it will cause the postpaid account to close as it was the only line on the account, giving you more headaches in the process.

Also, if you were to have a rep help you with this in a store, you may be subject to connection fees for Line B if you were to do it now. This is commonly credited during the black friday season. If you do it by yourself online, there is no additional fees.

The number can move between postpaid and prepaid under new lines/accounts, however the old plan for Phone number A will be lost.  All prepaid lines are their own account and no you cannot swap the prepaid numbers.

If you have a really good grandfathered plan for Phone number A, I highly suggest waiting for Black Friday promo plans.  In this case you would:

  1. Add a new line to your post paid account with a Black Friday plan and a new number
  2. Add a new prepaid account (I assume you do not want to move or cancel your 1st prepaid line).  Make sure to open this 2nd prepaid account with a different email than your first prepaid account and your post paid account.  Open this line with a temp number
  3. Once the 2nd prepaid line is confirmed working, port over your post paid account you want to move to prepaid.
