Question

Autopay is a tax on poor people

As the title states, auto pay is a tax on poor people because not everyone is able to pay their bill on a set date. This puts people at risk of NSF fees from their bank. So to avoid this, they're charged an extra "tax" every month by Koodo. Nice optics. Looks like I'll be heading to Freedom. 👎

In that case, you don't need to choose automatic payment. The automatic payment discount is optional, not mandatory. If the risk of paying NFS fees outweighs the benefit of the discount, you can choose not to use automatic payment.

Wgat do you mean by "So, to avoid this, Koodo is charged extra tax every month."? Koodo doesn't charge any taxes or fees to avoid NSF.

What do you not understand? If you can't pay exactly when koodo is asking you must pay an extra $10 a month. It may not be an actual tax but it feels like one. Especially when this is a new feature Koodo never had previously and other phone companies don't have. I can go to Freedom and not have to pay this fee period because they don't charge you for paying your bill when you want to.

If you are not aware, every major service provider, including Telus, Bell, and Rogers, has implemented some form of the auto-pay discount for quite a while. Freedom Mobile has their own Digital Discount as well. https://www.freedommobile.ca/en-CA/support/about-digital-discount

To avoid the auto-pay discount, you can simply switch to a prepaid line. You may want to consider Koodo Prepaid or their sister company, Public Mobile, as your options.

The choice is yours. Koodo isn't charging a fee for paying manually; they're offering a discount for using autopay. If autopay doesn't work for your situation, you don't have to.

Also, Freedom offers a digital discount too, so discounts tied to certain account features aren't unique to Koodo. If Freedom's plans work better for your needs, then switching makes sense.

If your budget is tight, you might want to explore cheaper plan alternatives that you can reasonably afford.  As stated by Milky Way above, all plan suppliers have started Auto Pay discounts, so there is no escaping it.  I do not like these either, but for different reasons from yours.
