Question

5G vs 5G+

Hi everyone,

I am just wondering about 5G and 5G+ data speed.

There has been a new tower installed near my house in the recent months. My phone, a Samsung Galaxy S22, is picking up 5G+ service.

I received a text message from Koodo yesterday stating that over the next 6 months, the speed will be increasing upto 1GBPS.

Now, is the speed increase to the 1GBPS apart of the 5G+ network or is it on the 5G network? If only apart of 5G, what is the benefit of 5G+?

Thanks,

Both are on the 5G network, but the data speeds on 5G+ are much faster, since they use higher frequency spectrums.

Hi,

5G+ (also called 5G UW or mmWave) uses a higher frequency band that delivers faster speeds (up to 1-2 Gbps vs 5G's typical 100-300 Mbps) but has much shorter range and worse building penetration. 5G on the lower/mid bands is more reliable for coverage. If you're near the tower and mostly outdoors, 5G+ is worth it. If you move around or go indoors a lot, stick with 5G — you'll get more consistent speeds.
