When is koodo going to have 5G public mobile now has it Virgin has it even freedom? Let's get it together here guys

No official announcements yet.

Likely sooner rather than later given the carriers that have recently got it.

@John Zarubiak Welcome back John! It’s been a while…..

We always consider various changes introduced to the market whether it’s by one of our own brands (Public) or a competitor’s.

We are currently looking at the pros and cons mostly from our customers’ perspective.  The vast majority of our people associate 5G with perceived greater speeds. However, at the same time, people question why they would need any greater speed at all.  Just ran a quick ‘speedtest’ on my phone in an area with only 2 bars of signal stregh:

While speed, connectivity, is hugely sensitive to many things; your device, the area you are in, do you think you would need anything more than an average 100-150Mbps for every day use?

If speed is what you are after, you do have a perk choice on your line. Given you have tons of data in your plan now you may consider swapping rollover data to speed boost. Just a thought!

What does speed boost do, this tells me that I am not getting the full signal and that there is better service?

@John Zarubiak Speed boost doubles the speed you have access to. You will find the Perk descriptions here

Interesting that means that I am receiving a reduced speed, a speed test shows good speed but yet it seems slower than my wifi which is only 15mps.

@John Zarubiak what speed doe your speed test show? And when say “it seems slower than wifi” how does that manifest itself? Page load of a particular website? Something else?

The speed test with kudo usually shows about 120 ish and yet even to load the kudo website on my phone. It's quicker usually with the Wi-Fi I have found in my experience as I have a co-worker that has eastlink internet at home and he has a very high speed reading but yet when he tries to stream TV it always freezes up and I live a couple blocks away from him and my tellus internet at only 15 barely freezes up. So I am not convinced that a speed meter correctly reads the whole picture of what happens behind the scenes with all the downloading

@John Zarubiak Yes, the actual experience, whether a site download or streaming depends on whole lot of things not just speed. Netflix recommends internet speeds of about 25Mbps. I know people who only have 15Mbps and have no problem with buffering etc. It’s a complex topic.

I now see Koodo offers 5g is this automatic or do you have to change your plan

You have to change your plan to a 5G one.

You can check in your self serve account to see which ones are available to you. It will say something like “x GB of data at 5G speed” in the description

So is my current plan going to slow down with a 4G LTE? This is probably why Kudo had offered more data earlier? get quality or quantity?

Nothing will change with your current plan.

They discontinued the speed boost perk (if you currently have it you keep it), and added in some new 5G plans. If you make changes, things will change, if you don’t, they’ll stay the same.

In terms of speed:
5G plans: Up to 250Mbps
Speed Boost perk: Up to 200Mbps
4G LTE plan: Up to 100Mbps
