An older family member has an LG C441  flip phone.  She has no need for data or texting; she only uses it to actually call people.

Will it continue working next year or does she need to upgrade?

Here’s some quick specs:

2G bands     GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
3G bands     -

Yes. From the manufacturer’s spec sheet, the phone is 3G capable, allowing for talk and text. Koodo has never operated a 2G network. There are unconfirmed reports of 3G networks shutting down by December 2025. If the information is accurate, you won’t have to upgrade for a while.

Expected 3G sunset dates in Canada

Great; thanks for the info and the links.  I’m going to stop by a Koodo kiosk in a mall today and ask a rep if they can confirm those dates.

Koodo’s already sent me three warning texts like this regarding my Samsung S3:

  • Hi , as technology evolves, older devices like your phone will soon begin to experience connection issues on our network. In 2023, your phone will lose the ability to send or receive picture messages. Not long after, it will also be unable to send or receive phone calls, text messages, or connect to cellular data.
  •
  • We want to help you get a new phone that will work when you need it. We've specially priced the Samsung A03S for only $7/month with the Koodo Tab.
  •
  • Call 1-833-838-3818 to learn more, and redeem this exclusive offer.
  •
  • Hurry though, this offer is only available for a limited time. Conditions apply.

I figured if MY phone was on the endangered species list, the flip phone would probably be even closer to technological extinction.

But after reading that article you linked to, this sounds (to me) like sales propaganda designed to panic users into upgrading before they really need to.
