Question

Using Offline Maps

I have a question about using off-line maps.

Google allows maps to be downloaded for use off-line and there are other apps too. I’m not clear though on how they interact with data. If I have my data / roaming turned off, will my location be shown on, say, Google Maps while I am walking around Rome? And if it does show my location, is that not using data?

Thanks for any assistance

Downloaded offline maps will still work with your data off. The location dot comes from the phone's GPS, which is satellite based and doesn't go through the Koodo network, so it isn't data usage and it won't trigger an Easy Roam day. Anything beyond the area you downloaded does need data though, so searching an address, live traffic or transit directions would be out. I would download the Rome area before you leave.

One thing that catches most people, having data roaming off is not enough on its own. You will have to turn off both cellular data and data roaming to avoid data usage https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/understanding-how-youll-be-charged-while-travelling

I would suggest you to download this app. It is free and includes walking paths and subway maps that would be useful for you when you are travelling. https://organicmaps.app
