Usage issues

The first 7 months I had my Koodo account I was using only 5-10GB of my 20GB plan, but the last few months I’ve been using close to 20GB of my data, but the way that I’m using my phone hasn’t changed. I’ve adjusted which apps use cellular data, turned my data off when I’m not on wifi, and even powered off my phone to avoid using up my data. I know that my Koodo account shows me how much data I used at what time of day, but since it doesn’t show me what is using the data, I can’t seem to solve the issue. It shows me that in one day, I used 7.5GB of data, except I was not on my phone very much that day and so I have no idea what could have triggered such a huge amount of data usage. 

I think I need to adjust some settings, but I’m not sure which ones, so any help/advice is much appreciated.

What phone do you have?

If you have Wifi Assist (uses data when wifi is slow) make sure to turn that off.

Also turn off any app and OS auto updates.

Are you using cellular data to automatically download the app updates? You should disable the feature to prevent further data usage. https://www.verizon.com/support/knowledge-base-207165

@Dennis I have an iPhone 16 pro and my wifi assist has been turned off for months. 

@MilkyWay The Background App Refresh is also turned off on my phone and has been for close to a year. I’m adjusted the automatic app updates just now and turned them off, but I have a feeling that there’s something more than just  that happening since so much of my data is being used. 

Any other suggestions?

Did you check your cellular data usage? It will help you determine which apps are using the most data on your phone. https://support.apple.com/en-ca/109323

Can you tell us or show us a screenshot of the top data app users from that screen?  Also when was the last time the data usage period was reset (it should be at the bottom of that screen)?

Hi ​@silvannn.v, we don’t have any information about what the data is used on. You can try to access your settings > Cellular then select Reset Statistics. We’d recommend resetting when your new bill cycle starts. It won’t help with past usage but you will be able to approximately monitor the data usage for the next bill cycle.
