Unable to add esim to my galaxy SE 21 5G

I am traveling abroad and looking at adding an esim to my phone for data.  I went into my settings and connections and there is no “esim card manager” option to add an esim.  I think Koodo has to do something on their end to enable this.  Can you help me Koodo?

Thank you.

Hi there,

At this time, from what I can find, the S21 FE does not support eSIM. It has the hardware capabilities but samsung have only hinted at adding the feature later in software updates but have been saying that for a long time.

Koodo already supports esim, however, they cant remotely change a feature within your device, only their own services. There isnt something they can do on their side to activate the feature as it has to do with the samsung software, not the koodo side of things.

Hi @Pdmaier

Just to double check, are you looking to add a foreign eSIm to your phone?

When you go to Settings  → SIM card manager, you do not see the option to add an eSIM or add mobile plan?

Only the Samsung S23 FE and S24 FE have eSIM capabilities. Any older devices from the FE line do not offer this feature.

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

Ok, so instead of an esim, I am wondering if the physical sim card would work if I bought one in the country I am traveling in.  This is all new to me so appreciate your patience!  Not sure how this would get loaded if there is no option for a sim card manager in my settings, so I am guessing this won’t work either.  Can someone please confirm?  If that is the case then it looks like I will just have to pay the crazy international roaming fee of $18 per day on my trip (or get a new phone) - ouch.

Cheers,

Paul

Yes you can remove your Koodo sim card and insert your travel sim card to use.  This is a common practice when traveling (it’s just esim is the newer technology people use today).

When you insert a new sim you will not need a sim manager since it will be the only sim in your phone

So you should be able to pickup a local physical sim as long as your device is compatable with the local network frequency bands which newer Samsung devices usually are.

However, you would have to remove your koodo physical sim (make sure not to lose it) and swap it for the local sim. You also wont be able to use your phone number if you do this but one that is provided by the local provider.

International Easy roam costs $16 per day, but Koodo do also offer their easy roam passes. Do you happen to be travelling to any of the applicable countries? As this would be much cheaper than regular easy roam and easier to setup. More info can be found below.

Right on, thank you Dennis and Oliver C for your helpful suggestions.  Great to see I have a couple of options.  I am traveling to Portugal which is listed in their easy roam pass so will plan to go with that.  If for some reason that does not work I will get the physical sim card in Portugal.  Thanks again, I really appreciate it.😎
