We are heading to Hong Kong and Mainland China in a few days, we were going to purchase eSIM and VPN but an now hearing that using Roaming through our existing plan works and then we can connect with people at home.
Has anyone used Koodo roam plans in China, how was your experience? Was it easy to set up? I have a 100 GB rollover plan so I’m not worried about running out just eat to make sure I have all the required access while we are there.

It's $18/day international, charged only on days you actually use the phone, and your plan's talk, text and data travel with you, so the 100 GB is what you'd be using. Before you fly, check in Self Serve under Manage add-ons that Easy Roam INTL, International Voice Roaming and International Data Roaming are all on your line. Easy Roam is supposed to add those automatically but it does glitch sometimes. Once you land, data roaming has to be ON in your device settings or you get no data at all. The arrival text may say you do not have Easy Roam, that's a generic notice, go by what Self Serve shows.
That is correct. However, I believe your connection may be slower while roaming, since the traffic will be redirected back to Canada.
You are better off getting a local SIM card in Hong Kong for use in mainland China.
The use of a VPN is up to you. If you wish to access certain sites and services not available in mainland China, you’ll need a VPN for any internet access, both roaming or WIFI. That’s up to you if you require that access or just VPN use for general security, such as when using public wi-fi. The phone is accessing internet through a roaming partner, so whatever restrictions that roaming partner has in effect would apply to you as well.
