Hi, i’m visiting Japan soon for a couple weeks, and I was thinking about buying an Esim so i can use internet while I’m traveling. Will it work on my phone even if i’m currently on a monthly plan? I could also rent a pocket-wifi device, but the esim looks to be cheaper and more convenient.

+4Which phone are you using? And I assumed you are asking about an eSIM from a Japanese carrier?
It does not matter if you are on a monthly plan with Koodo.
If your phone allows esim then it should work. However you may want to ensure your phone is compatible for their esim requirements.
From my understanding with esim, you should be able to manage multiple sims on your phone. SO when you activate your japanese esim, you should be able to set your koodo sim as a secondary line with data solely being used on the japanese esim
