Telus internet backup featurees

Telus have a feature that if their internet goes down any devices will automatically be switched to mobile data and the data used will not count in your mobile data plan. This applies to Telus, Koodo or Public mobility accounts.

My Telus internet went down 4 days ago so this feature would have kicked in, but looking at my Koodo mobile data usage it appears that the Telus data usage is included in my mobile data usage.

What gives and who do I speak to to get it corrected?

How are your devices connecting while the internet is down? If any of them are going through your phone's hotspot or sharing, that's regular Koodo data and it will count against your plan.

I would check Self Serve, Usage, View details and look at the timestamps to see whether the data lines up with the 4 days your internet was out https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/keeping-track-your-data-usage

Regarding the backup feature itself, that's set up on the TELUS internet side and not on your Koodo account, so TELUS internet support would be the ones who can confirm how it's provisioned and whether that usage should have been excluded.

I would suggest you to follow up with Telus directly, since it is part of their Internet Backup feature. You can speak with a rep through Telus Assist or by dialing 1-888-811-2323 to reach the technical support team during business hours. https://www.telus.com/en/support/contact-us#openchat

I hadn't heard of this feature before, but found this on a Web search:

How It Works

  • Zero Data Impact: When a fixed broadband network outage is detected, the feature routes internet traffic through a connected mobile phone. The mobile data used during this time is not billed or counted against your monthly data bucket. [12]
  • Carrier Eligibility: The service is explicitly available if the paired phone is on an active data plan with TELUS Mobility, Koodo Mobility, or Public Mobile. [1]
  • Automatic Switching: It routes the traffic seamlessly through the phone with the strongest cellular connection currently sitting on your home Wi-Fi network. [12]

Important Requirements

To ensure the feature functions properly, you must meet a few technical criteria: [1]

  • Compatible Hardware: It only works if your home internet is powered by a TELUS Network Access Hub (NAH) router or a TELUS Wi-Fi Hub. Third-party routers are not compatible.
  • App Activation: You must manually opt-in and configure the service beforehand through the TELUS SmartHome+ app using your MyTELUS credentials.
  • Device Settings: The host phone must remain connected to the home Wi-Fi with cellular data turned on. It will not function if a VPN or Power Saving Mode blocks background processing on the phone.
  • Power Constraints: This feature does not protect against power outages. If your house loses electricity, your home router will turn off completely, meaning the local Wi-Fi link required to bridge your devices to the phone will be broken.
