Telus Cold Call About Discount

Hi,

I just got off the phone from a representative and tech person claiming to be from Telus offering a discount for being a good customer for always paying my phone bill on time for Koodo (since they’re linked). However, I just switched back to Koodo a couple weeks ago and separated my name and number from an old Koodo account with my grandmother who’s still on Koodo. I haven’t even had to pay my first bill yet. But they’re offering 30% discount for the next two years bringing my phone bill from $34 to $30? Or offer the $30 instead for 2 years no contract, can cancel anytime etc. It was hard to understand what he was saying with the accent. I understood enough that he said I needed to pay off my first bill first before they can add the discount and I’m like, “Yeah okay I can do that.”

I get to the tech guy while trying to pay my bill early and he’s now telling me I don’t need to pay my bill to get the discount, he’ll send an email with the offer. Like a dummy I gave him my email I use with my Koodo account, which asked for specifically.

The offer shows up in my spam folder, now red flags. It’s saying 40% discount and the email from sender looked legit TELUS MOBILITY <sales@telusservicesinfo.com>. Then he said we need to reset my koodo account password. I’m having a WTF moment so I’m googling about Telus calling to offer discounts like this. The previous week I already shut down another Telus cold call about new phone promotions honestly saying I’m not interested and still quite happy with my current phone.

So thank Google for saying Telus doesn’t do this and most likely a scam because now I get another spam email with the ‘temporary promotional password’ to use when I get the proper password reset email from Koodo. By this point I’m trying to tell the guy I’m backing out, not touching any links, he’s asking what’s happened, etc. I’m a apparently so hesitant I hear him swear under his breath then tell him good bye.

Tried calling Telus service number to confirm whether it was spam or not, but just got a bot.

They even had this Oshawa, ON number 1-905-558-2273

That is not a legit number from Koodo and most likely a scam. I would suggest you to ignore the email and immediately report this incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. https://antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/report-signalez-eng.htm

I just got a similar call today with the same 30% discount.  When I challenge them they got rude and aggressive as well.

If all they got is your email and phonenumber you should be ok.

You did the right thing to not click any of the links.

Just keep an eye out for any suspicious activity moving forward.  You should also track your credit report form your banking app on a regular basis as good practice
