Opening SSH port on Koodo Internet router

I am unable to make outgoing SSH (secure shell) connections from any of my computers (to outside machines) when using the Koodo router. If I switch back to my previous service (Bell, still active), everything works fine. Seems to be something in the router’s firewall settings, but neither setting “All other ports” to Outgoing nor even turning the firewall OFF has any effect.

Is there a way to allow outgoing SSH connections with this router? To be clear, I am not trying to SSH _into_ any of my home computers from outside, nor an I am trying to SSH into the router. (These are the questions I found asked quite often, but I found nothing regarding my situation, where outgoing connections are blocked.) Or do I have to get my own router to bypass this one’s limitations?

Hi @justeastoflyra

There is no specification regarding the SSH functionality on the router provided by Koodo, however If you try to connect a different router to the Koodo modem, are you able to make the SSH connections?

@Flo Koodo

I haven’t yet tried another router with the Koodo modem (the only ones I have on hand are quite ancient), but I still have my old service with Bell connected, and have no trouble with SSH connections when I’m connected to that network.

I will try to dig out my old Linksys router in the next couple of days, and try that, just to confirm that the issue is in the Koodo router. It seems pretty likely, though.

Is anyone using the Telus Boost Wi-Fi 6 Lite able to make SSH connections? Is there an alternative offered?

There is a firewall on many routers by default. Have you tried to access the admin console using the information at the back of the router to see if there is option to disable it?

Check my original message -- I mentioned that I disabled the firewall entirely on the router and it had no effect at all. Seems that the setting is either not being respected or there is something else interfering. Maybe there is some other setting that would help?

Have you tried to remove the router and use a different router or a LAN cable to connect to the modem? Can you run a test to see if the port 22 is not blocked?
