He was on a monthly paid plan and lost his phone while it was out of service and in airplane mode.  No real hope of recovering it.  What I’d like to do is give him my old Samsung a20 but have him retain his old number if this is possible. Could someone walk me through this?

What you would need is a new SIM card, you can visit a Koodo kiosk to get a new SIM. You can ask them to switch the SIM for you there also. After that, all you have to do is to put the new SIM in the replacement phone.

Due to fraud issue, Koodo put extra scrutiny on SiM change. If you cannot travel, i suggest you schedule a call back from a rep and ask them to send you a new sim.
