I want to preemtively avoid roaming fees, I am travelling to a part of Ontario (Pelee Island) that is close to the American border, last time I was at this location the phone thought it was in Ohio. What can I do?

Make sure that roaming is disabled on your phone, and to be on the safe side connect to Koodo's network manually. You'll need to do this any time you reboot your phone.
