Question

CGNAT and IPv6

Hi Folks,

I have Koodo Home Internet and am looking access a home server from outside my network. I have not been able to find a specific answer to whether Koodo has my IP behind CGNAT, if they offer a public IP address for those who need it, or if they offer IPv6 addresses for those who want it.

Does anyone know anything on these topics? I am thinking of getting a support callback but honestly am worried they won't be helpful or know what I'm talking about.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Just to confirm, are you currently using your own personal router connected to the Koodo-provided modem?

From what I searched, Unlike Telus fiber or copper connections, Koodo Home Internet is a coaxial cable service that runs entirely on partner networks (Rogers/Shaw in Western Canada, and Rogers or Cogeco in Ontario, or Vidéotron in Quebec). Because of this cable infrastructure, Koodo Home Internet does not place your connection behind CGNAT. You are assigned a real, routable dynamic public IPv4 address.

If you are having trouble reaching your home server from outside, it is highly likely you are in a Double NAT situation. This happens when a personal router is plugged into the Koodo modem/router combo, creating two active firewalls

Hi Dinh,

I recieved a Koodo modem and separate router not a combo unit. I am using the modem and a personal higher quality router.

I haven't attempted to connect to my server yet, I am in the process of spinning it up. I was more looking for information since it's hard to test these things in advance. So thank you!

I have been unable to login to the modem using its login credentials on the bottom which is unfortunate.

Could you point me to where you got this info? I have had a hell of a time getting good information about Koodo's Internet service.

If the modem login on the label on your modem is incorrect, you will need to request a callback via koodo assist to speak with a home internet rep

The problem is actually that going to the IP address listed on the bottom returns nothing. Even if I plug directly into the modem, it sits trying to connect and then eventually times out. Anyways I will do some tests about reaching my server.

When you tried to connect to your Koodo router by using a direct Lan, did you have access to internet? Was all light green?

Koodo technically didn't want people to tinkling with their modem, not much information is officially publish. I recommend you try again with incognito mode to see if that can help.  You might need to turn on bridge mode of Koodo modem and let your personal router take control

If navigating to the ip address for the modem won't pull anything up even when you're wired directly to it then the modem is almost certainly bridged, meaning all routing features have been disabled. The easiest way to confirm this is to check what ip address is being pulled by your own router when it's hooked up. If it's getting an external ip then the koodo model is a dumb modern.
