Not authorised BUSUU charges from Busuu

 

On January 1, 2026 I received the message from 5490

**
FREEMSG: Enter 8305 to subscribe to Busuu. Cost CAD $15.00 per month (taxes ecls.). Help 14375369235 DIGITAL OLINE DEVELOPMENT, S.L.U. @promo.busuupremium-ca.com #8305

**

I didn't respond to it considering this as a spam. Next message was

**

FREEMSG: Welcome to Busuu. Cost CAD $15 per month…… To unsub send STOP to 5490.

**

The message was sent to spam.

On Jan 2, 2026 I received another message from 5490

**

FREEMSG: You have been charged CAD $15.00…..

**

Same messages were coming for next four months.

 

I have never authorized this change. I have never downloaded their application, if such an application even exists, and I have never visited their website. Despite that, these charges continued for four consecutive months before I was able to stop them.

As my service provider, Koodo should not allow unauthorized third‑party subscriptions or charges to be added to my account. I would like to know what steps I can take to receive compensation for these unauthorized charges.

P.S. I have the full set of messages from Busuu confirming that they never had my authorization. The amount is $60—not large enough for court, but certainly enough to file a complaint with the BBB and to consider switching my entire family to another provider.

As per the instruction of a Koodo rep in this thread, you could contact them and ask them to provide proper evidence of subscription.

 

To cancel this subscription, text STOP to the short code associated with the service (5490).

 

For billing disputes, please contact Busuu:

 

 

Regarding the automatic subscription without your consent, which phone are you using? Have you checked if any app is compromised?

Do you imply that anybody can charge the customer’s account and the customer should deal with it on his own? What about customer protection?

Samsung A52. It is not compromised, sorry. The BuSuu application was never installed. The SPAM message was rightly marked as a spam.

Hi ​@Dfs, have you followed the steps above to stop the subscription? If you would like to dispute the charges, please contact the provider as we have no access to the service. 

We can block third party purchases for your number, please let us know if you’d like us to proceed with that.

The subscription had already been stopped by text message one hour prior to my original post. This, however, is not the reason for opening this thread. The charges were never authorized, but they were nonetheless processed.

You would have to contact the number and email above first for details, if they can’t provide anything to prove that you were subscribed, you can then proceed with Koodo dispute.

The email to BUSUU has been sent. However, I find Koodo’s handling of this situation absolutely unacceptable. I expected that you, as my service provider, would protect my account from unauthorized charges.

Is there a way to explicitly prohibit any services not provided directly by Koodo?

@Dfs yes there is.  Georgia above ask you specifically if you wanted these blocked
