I will be heading to Australia for a year. I'd like to keep my number for the lowest fee possible.

Thanks both for your replies. We ended up deciding to switch to Freedom where we can use the app as well and still have the texting available for MFA.

We decided this after having a good discussion with Koodo Customer Service. Since we needed it for a year and needed SMS that wasn't VoIP based, the Freedom solution seemed to fit.

It is unfortunate though that Koodo wasn't able to do something to keep the account active. There really isn't anything to encourage retention upon return to Canada.

Can you Tell us more the Freedom app and how it works?  I never heard about Freedom having an app for texting.

What plan did you sign up for with Freedom?

Hi @Tod

The Seasonal Hold plan would be an option to hold the number for up to 6 months.

Are you looking to use the services abroad?

Alternatively, you can consider porting over your number to Fongo for a one-time fee of $25 before you leave Canada. You should be able to keep making and receiving calls from Canada on their app. If you require unlimited texting to Canadian numbers, you can sign up for a subscription.

Once you come back, you can set up a new account with Koodo and transfer your number.

Hi @Dennis ,

We haven't tried the app yet but we are planning the following due to our requirements.

Freedom mobile - for MFA (receive unlimited texts)

- Annual prepaid plan. It sounds like some of the "parking" options may have their VoIP numbers blocked. If Freedom works for <$9/mth, that is good with us.

Amaysim - for a local number, texting and data

- Regular plan. Not sure if we will go 28 days or yearly.

- Amaysim also provides unlimited calling and texting with Canada

- Not sure if we can port to our existing eSIM. We started the process to check but stopped before completion as we only want to move just before departure. It seemed straightforward.

Hopefully this helps.

Make sure you test out the Freedom plan before you leave, especially the app if that is what you are planning on using.

Once you are overseas, support from any canadian provider will be very limited
