Direct Debit Payment

I was advised that I would reduce my plan cost by $10/mo. if I changed my payment method from credit to debit.  I got part way through the process, when I was told that they use a company called Plaid and to input my banking info.  I was asked to input my bank account number, which I did, then asked for my password, which I was told by my bank not to do..  Fortunately, I could choose an altenative option, the manual option, which did not request my bank password so chose this route.

I would like to know if requesting a bank password is legal, and if not, what action needs to be taken?

Hi there,

to confirm, were you speaking to a Koodo rep and they were making this change for you or were you singing up for auto pay via a bank account through self serve?

If through self serve, that is how you sign up for the service as you can login using a 3rd party (your banks associated app/login page). This is done by following the steps here: Setting up pre-authorized payments | Koodo Mobile just make sure to sign up using a bank account to receive the discount.

If it was a rep asking for your bank details and bank password, then that is another story. If this is the case, did you schedule the call or were you reached out to?

Hi @Patrice Carmen Furlong, you can definitely input your account information manually as well, we can see you’ve set up the auto-payment via bank draft, you should see the discount starting with your next bill.

If you wanted to know more about Plaid and how it works, you can check out this article

In response to my posting, I received a few offline, direct communications from Koodo.  I raised the security issue of asking customers for their bank password as a requisite to make direct deposit payments.  Subsequently, I asked to have the issue raised to Koodo’s payment and security group.

Similar top payment processors, Plaid is a payment with bank intermediary that is widely used in North America and is widely viewed as secure and safe.

However, if you are uncomfortable, you are free to use the manual method or use a credit card.
