Basic Talk/Text Plan for Kid

Hi!

Any thoughts on the most economical way to add a talk/text only line for kid (brining your own device)? We hoping to add something basic just to be able to get in touch with him while if he’s out playing in the neighbourhood.

Any ideas welcome!

Jenn

Prepaid has 100 minutes a month plan with unlimited texting for $15. If on auto-pay a tiny bit of data is included.

There are a few different options for adding a talk/text only line for a kid. Here are a few possibilities:

  1. Prepaid or pay-as-you-go plan: Many mobile carriers offer prepaid or pay-as-you-go plans that can be a cost-effective way to add a line for a kid. These plans typically do not require a contract and can be activated on a basic phone or smartphone that the kid already has. You simply pay for the minutes, texts, and data that you use, so it can be a good option if you don't anticipate your child using the line very often. Take a look at Public Mobile

  2. Family plan: If you already have a family plan with your mobile carrier, you may be able to add a line for your kid at a discounted rate. This can be a good option if you're already paying for multiple lines and don't want to switch to a different carrier. Telus offers this.

  3. MVNOs: Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) are companies that lease wireless network capacity from the major carriers and then resell it to consumers at a lower price. These companies often offer very affordable plans with talk and text only options. This would be Koodo.

Overall, it's a good idea to shop around and compare plans from different carriers and MVNOs to find the most cost-effective option for your kid.

Any pre-paid plan avoids an accidental billing bomb… once the minutes and data you paid for are used up, usage is cut off. No chance of accidental roaming or other surprises.
