Question

Unable to receive OTP SMS

Hello team,

I’m using a Koodo monthly plan. I’m in India right now and need to receive OTP text messages for banking and other transactions. When I key in my mobile number on the bank’s website it says OTP has been sent but I don’t receive any.

Can you help?

Did this help you find an answer to your question?

Are you connected to a network in India? Do you have roaming turned on in self-serve (international voice roaming add-on provisions roaming for talk and text)?

Yes I’m connected to a network. I can see network on my iPad and it is also connected to a Wifi. I have turned off roaming so that I don’t incur roaming charges.

OK so you'll need roaming on if you want to receive the texts. My suggestion is to only keep “international voice roaming” in self-serve add-ons. Data won't be usable, so your chances of roaming are restricted to if you answer or make a call, or send an outgoing SMS. That way you should avoid roaming charges pretty reliably.

I don’t know how to only enable “international voice roaming” in self-serve add-ons. Can you please guide?

Hi @Kai24

The international voice roaming add on is provisioned to your account (under Mobile services - > Manage add ons).

Are you able to get regular text messages? Are just the OTP messages that you don’t receive?

Hi @Flo Koodo

Thank you for enabling the add-on! :)

I’m not able to test if I’m receiving regular text messages as I don’t know anyone with international text messaging enabled who can send text messages outside Canada. Can you help send a normal text message on my number? That way I’ll know if its just OTP or all text messages

Incoming message doesn’t need any add-on. International SMS is for outgoing SMS. As long as you are roaming, you should be able to receive SMS.

When you first joined a local network in India, did you receive any roaming SMS from them or Koodo?

Hi @Dinh

I did not receive any SMS from Koodo but I did receive an email saying that my number is connected to a roaming network in India

What is the current status of network on the top right of screen as of now? Is your phone have signal?
As well, have you manually search to connect to other local roaming network in your area?

You may have to connect with different networks to see if the issue is the particular network you’re connected to. There’s a few things to try one at a time to do process of elimination here.

You can have anyone text you as it doesn’t matter where you are, if someone texts your Canadian number, it’s not considered international texting for them. Only if they text a non-Canadian number is it considered international texting. So you can get anyone you know at all to text you and it won’t charge them extra, even if they don’t have international SMS on their plan.
