Question

Receiving 2FA texts in outside Canada

Can I still receive 2FA texts from my credit card company while outside Canada if my Koodoo SIM card is turned on but my Data and Roaming features are turned off? I will also have a local e-SIM turned on at the same time.  What happens if I leave the Data feature on but Roaming is still off? Which SIM will use the data?

Thanks,

Yes you can. I’d suggest shifting to removing easy roam from your add-ons in self-serve, and only leaving “international voice roaming” on. This will not allow data roaming to occur. Then you’ll only incur the pay per use rate if you make or answer a call, or send an outgoing SMS. Incoming SMS remains free.

You’ll be fine if data roaming is off, even if you don’t remove “international data roaming” as the esim you have is a local one. If you were using one of those world app roaming esims, you’d need roaming on to use that data. You can also turn off the Koodo sim card when you don’t want to use it.

Thanks! I think I understand how the technology works now.

I checked me add-ons and I added the "international voice roaming" to my phone but I did NOT add the "international data roaming" or the "Easy Roam" add-ons.  I will actually be using a regional, data only e-SIM for Europe from Airalo, not a local e-SIM.

So if my understanding is correct,  I can have both of my Koodoo SIM and the European e-SIM turned on, have both the Data and Roaming feature of my phone turned on and I will be able to send/receive voice calls and send texts (paying international rates) but I will receive free 2FA texts,  and my European e-SIM will also work and support all of the data internet features eg. browsing, WhatsApp, etc. Do I have this correctly stated??

Thanks in advance,

That should be the case. You just need to make sure your phone settings are correct to avoid any unnecessary roaming charges.

Yeah if you’re using Airalo you’ll definitely need to keep data roaming on. But as long as it’s the only sim with data provisioned, you should be fine just like that.

One final question regarding billing for incoming calls while I'm in Europe. As long as I don't answer the call, then I won't get charged? Or is there some type of charge from the European telco for routing the Canadian call to my phone?  Just trying to determine whether I should keep the Koodoo SIM off until I need it to receive a 2FA text from my credit card company when I make an online purchase while in Europe. Thanks again. You folks have been very helpful and I've learned a lot!

That is correct.  If you dont answer, you wont get charged.

If you are worried about triggering roaming accidentally you can definitely keep the Koodo sim off until you need it.  However, if you do not use the Koodo sim to talk or to send a text, then you should be fine.

If there is anything to worry about from what we see in the community, is sometimes people thing their roaming sim is active for data, but somehow, their koodo sim is used for roaming data.

Have you checked the Koodo easy roam travel pass for europe?  It might simplify things for you

Hi @S Rea

Yes, no charges will apply if you don’t answer the calls. Just make sure you don’t check the voicemail either, and if you have an iPhone with the Apple Live Voicemail enbled, make sure it’s disabled, to prevent unwanted charges.

For more info about how to prevent roaming charges, please check out this article https://community.koodomobile.com/plans-services-232910/easy-roam-understanding-how-you-will-be-charged-while-traveling-7811296

If you really need to take or receive calls from Canada during your trip, you can actually set up call forwarding to avoid the roaming charge by downloading an app such as Fongo. You can then include it as an add-on in your Self-Serve portal for a monthly fee of $5 and forward the calls to the Canadian number. https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/call-forwarding
