Daughter lost deceased Dad's phone message

My 18 year old daughter’s currently in Thailand. We were hoping this would be a great trip for, and she needs something great because she’s only now coming out from intense grief for her dad, my husband, who died about a year ago.

She dropped her phone in the ocean and it’s lost. She’d kept a voicemail message on her phone from her dad and loved listening to his voice over and over again. Is there any way this message will have been stored with Koodo? I know this is a long shot, but I’m grasping at straws here..

I’m sorry for your loss.

All of this depends on how the voicemail message was stored.

Was the voicemail accessed through calling Koodo’s voicemail system?

Was the voicemail recorded and saved to the phone?  If so, how was it recorded and saved?  Was it backed up or saved (knowingly or unknowingly) to the cloud (icloud, google drive, microsoft onedrive, etc)?  Was it emailed or sent to another person or to themselves like through whatsapp, messenger, Line, Discord, etc?

My daughter’s home so I can ask her now. It was saved on the phone. It’s not saved on iCloud or anywhere else, as far as we know.

What phone was it?

Do you know where the recording was saved on the phone?  What app was used to play the recording?

Note, that I am grasping at straws here.  I do not want to give any false hope.

It was an iPhone and it was just the usual phone app, in the section that says “Voicemail”. I have a few on my own phone that I haven’t deleted. She just never deleted that message from her dad.

Sorry if I’m misunderstanding your questions. All the phone tech stuff used to be my husband’s department!

If you call the voicemail to check the voicemail, is it in Koodo’s voicemail box system?

From your description, she may be using Visual Voicemail, which is just a visual representation of the voicemail inbox so it may still be in the inbox (hopefully)???

It could be Apple Live Voicemail where the voicemail is answered and recorded on the iphone directly.  There is a local copy audio on the phone and the transcription.  If the iphone had the setting to sync and back up the voicemail then it may be backed up to your icloud.

It doesnt sound like Voicemail to text since that is transcription.

And Lastly it could be an Instant Voicemail but that is sent by Koodo via text message.  It does not sound like this one

I’ve looked in icloud and can’t see anything to do with voicemail. If it’s visual voicemail, then we can find out only when she’s got a new phone all set up again with her phone number, right? There isn’t a way of checking the inbox online (i.e. without the phone)?

You can check the voicemail by dialing her phone number from any phone and when the voicemail greeting answers, press the * key to get the the password login menu

Thank you! I feel like we’re getting closer.... I can call my daughter’s phone number and hear her voicemail greeting, but unfortunately she can’t remember her password!

Maybe Koodo can help her get a new password, even though she can’t access texts or anything at the moment.

She remembered the password! But it just got us to ‘new’ messages, not to any saved messages. But, still, this feels like progress!

Voicemail doesn't stay in Koodo voicemail box forever. after certain period of time, it will be deleted. If I recall correctly it will be stored for 10 days (and customer had to re-save it).

As of now, from your description, those might be already removed from Koodo systems. I would recommend you schedule a call back from Koodo using their digital assist www.koodo.com/chat and ask a rep if they can recover them.

It sounds like Apple Live Voicemail.

You will need to have had the phone backed up via iCloud and the Phone & FaceTime sync on. You will then need to restore the back up to an iPhone to possibly recover the voicemail, if the iCloud back up was completed.

Thank you, @Dinh and @Dennis

I will contact Koodo and see if there’s any possibility they can recover the message. I’ll also check her iCloud… once we’ve figured out what her iCloud password is!

Note that you will need to restore the back up to an iphone.  I dont think it is just an audio file on the icloud drive

@Dennis We managed to get access to her iCloud. And you're right that there wasn’t an audio file stored on iCloud. But when she got her new-to-her-phone (her best friend's hand-me-down) set up, the message was on there! So, so happy!
