Question

Read MMS with Data disabled - worked on older phone but not on new one

I switched from a Moto G7 to Samsung S21 FE phone. The G7 has a switch in the network settings to allow the ability to read MMS messages without Data being enabled. This worked automatically.

I put the SIM in the S21 and I can’t seem to find a similar setting on the new phone and the only way I can read a MMS message is to manually enable Data, which I prefer not having to do each time.

APN settings are set on the new phone as per https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/setting-data-your-non-koodo-phone?search_api_views_article_search_fulltext=apn%20settings

Any idea how I can get this to work on the S21?

Each phone while using android as a base, can put their own design and features into it. This is not a feature I’ve ever seen Samsung offer. If you don’t see a toggle for it in the settings then it’s not something the phone has.

So the only way is I have to enable Data manually when I want to read an MMS message, then disable it each time?

Correct. Most plans have enough in them now a days that you can leave data on all the time and not worry about it.

If it’s a talk and text plan you can add a data block with picture messaging for $5/month so that you don’t have to worry about turning it off/on to avoid extra data charges if that’s why you’re doing it too.
