I added my wife's phone to my account, but she needs a sim card. gave my credit card info. got a message saying I would receive an email. None have arrived, there is no confirmation anywhere. Is this common? How long should I wait. My email for my phone almost came instanly.

Also, check your junlt/spam emails. In many cases, the activation email were sent there

I am glad it turned out to be fine. The approval process still requires a rep to do it, as far as I know. That might be the reason for the delay.
