Question

Prepaid SIM card

Are there some prepaid SIM cards on the market which can’t be topped up? As in one time use disposable?

I could add the SIM card number on this chat but not sure if I should.

We are using SIM cards in security cameras during the maple syrup production. Generally lasts 6 weeks out of a year.

I was able to add $15 prepaid onto the card yesterday and saw the charge on my account.

But I get an error message “SIM not provisioned for voice”

Does it require re-activation if it’s been neglected and not used for well over 90 days?

Anybody have some suggestions?

Not end of the world if I have to consider the $15 top up plus tax gone down the drain. But I still need a solution to make the camera work.

Hi there,

Sim cards are a one time use. Because of this, if you allow the previous prepaid account to cancel then the sim card that was associated with the account is no longer usable. Sim cards for prepaid cannot be reactivated once the account closes.

You will have to aquire another sim. After which you can perform a sim swap on your prepaid account. Once you do, the number and plan will transfer to the new sim, so you would not have wasted your $15 on a new prepaid account. You can get a new sim from your closest koodo or telus store for about $10 + tax. 👍

Thanks for the information.

Lets see if I can accomplish that. But I have a concern on this matter before trying.

Is it worthwhile trying the number & plan transfer if this will once again only be used short term then neglected until next February or March?

I already have a new SIM card in my hand from the guy who supplied the cameras. And once again I was not given the prepaid account details just a new SIM card. I could try getting account details if he already activated the card.

Hm, ok so just to clarify the situation.

You previously had a prepaid account for these cameras. I presume, for data usage. They were used for the 6 weeks, and then not used for a long period of time, presumably longer than 90 days after the account was suspended and you did not to up the accounts again as you didn’t need it.

Now, we need to use the cameras again. However, since it has been a long time and the accounts are likely closed, the sim cards no longer work.

Can you clarify a few things:

1. When you topped up again recently for $15, did you go and get a new prepaid account and sim card or did you do something else to top it up? You should not have been able to if the account was closed.

2. Can you confirm that you only made the payments last time until the 6 weeks were up and did not pay again.

3. Are you able to login to any koodo self serve accounts or are you only provided the sims and nothing else? If so, did you receive any emails from regarding the activations, as you should have.

Just from your last post it seems a bit more than just re-using an expired prepaid sim 😅 some clarity would help.

Hi there

I’m just a guy trying to help out a guy that’s trying to help out a guy. 😉

1 or did you do something else to top it up? My Bad! I used DING (had no idea DING exists until I researched google how to top up)

2. Can you confirm that you only……. Very confident of this since the owner of cameras had no idea at all about prepaid SIM cards 😁 (I’m the maintenance guy with all the headaches to keep the system running sort of smoothly)

3 or are you only provided the sims and nothing else?  nothing else at all! not even as much as ketchup or mustard for my hotdog.

I don’t have a big worry about them $15 since the owner told me to charge the thrown away $15 + tax to him.

But yes he will use this new activated card (2-3 weeks) until mother nature decides it’s summer time & sap gets bitter. And with that the maple syrup production (equipment, camera’s etc.) will be totally neglected until next Feb. or Mar. whenever mother nature decides it’s time to this all over again.

So maybe the best choice is to let cards expire & buy new one every time? (once a year)

Ah I see! Thank you for the response.

Yes that would be what I would suggest. This is because it would be a lot cheaper just to use the service when you need it, no longer top it up, and then get a new one a year later. Especially since the numbers used dont matter.

I am not too sure how DING works in comparison but if as it is also a prepaid service it would be very similar as a subscription, though you would need to reach their customer support for more details on when accounts expire / close etc. 😎👍
