Can I text with a "data only" plan?

I got my son a sim card and he is using an old phone. I decided to just buy him a gig of data hoping he could use it to just text when he is out at the park etc… but koodo doesn’t seem to allow it. I tried what’s app and it doesn’t seem to work either. I just get repeated messages from koodo saying I do not have a texting plan.

This doesn’t seem fair

Do you mean data only plan with prepaid?

Why not get data plus talk and text plan?

$30 with 500mb, but with auto top up, you get bonus 500mb.

No you cannot with a data only plan. You technically can but it is exorbitant per use rates.
Is this postpaid then? The 30dollar 1gb plan?

Incoming text messages on a data only plan are free, but outgoing messages will cost $0.25 per message.

You'd be better off on public mobile. $25/month gives you unlimited talk and text with 500MB of data and you can get a bonus 500MB for a total of 1GB of you sign up with autopay.

You mentioned that you tried WhatsApp and that doesn’t work either? Does the phone connect at all?  apps should work if you have a data plan, so he can send messages using the internet.

I tried looking for the account, but I believe it’s prepaid.
