APN settings for 3G network using Koodo Prepaid

Does anyone have the APN settings needed to access cellular data in USA and US Virgin Islands through Koodo Prepaid? I believe the partners are AT&T and T-Mobile. We know the 3G network is being shut down, but not quite yet.

The Koodo APN should be the same as in Canada. There. Is not special US APN

For AT&T, your handset has to be on the whitelist, for starters. Older tech phones will only work on T-Mobile, not AT&T. Had to buy a different phone and get a plan directly from AT&T.

Prepaid roaming is seriously de-prioritized by the US networks. AT&T: 5 bars all the time, Koodo: no service in the same signal area.

I’m willing to bet that Telus retail or Koodo postpaid customers using the pricey “EasyRoam” services have no issues roaming on AT&T.  😉

All of the VoLTE and “compatible” handset issues is nothing but carrier games to keep customers locked into their services and buying devices from them.

The market seems to be headed towards consolidation of only a few handset device players (meaning less choice for us consumers).  Eventually the many IP based communications apps (whatsapp, signal, Meet, Zoom, Facetime etc) will dominate and hopefully replace legacy telephony and SMS.  At which point VoLTE and “compatible” handsets will become irrelevant.  And this is why service plans have now shifted to having a mobile data focus and the GB/month and speed profiles.

US carriers actually are shutting down 3G so VoLTE is a thing, even for postpaid customers unfortunately.

Yes I have been aware and following this from about 18 months prior.  ATT began their decommissioning in Feb 2022 and from my understanding 3G has been fully turned off.  Even domestic users of old devices in the US were forced to upgrade.  Prepaid Koodo/PM are impacted even if they have VoLTE compatible handsets.  Most postpaid/retail customers should be using fairly modern devices and the likelihood of them not having voice phone support when roaming is likely minute.   Telus has no real incentive to get VoLTE going for prepaid until our 3G shutdown in 2025.  They would rather you be on a more expensive monthly plan or sell you a device on a multi-year finance term.  Keeping prepaid this way pushes users to move up for VoLTE and faster data speeds.

Prepaid does not support VoLTE at all, even if you have a whitelisted phone. Koodo should stop selling US Roaming Boosters until they actually work.
