Upgrading phone on a decade old plan

I have a Galaxy A5, and my plan is $30 a month, no data, that I’ve just been carrying over from when I got my first phone at 14 lol. I’m planning on buying a new Galaxy directly from Samsung to avoid having to upgrade my plan/tab (and so I can get it in green), but I’d like to confirm with someone who has experience that I definitely won’t be pushed to upgrade the plan if I take this route.

As an afterthought, do all phones automatically have access to the 5g network or are people paying a premium for that, like fiber optic internet? As you can tell by my current model, I haven’t got much experience with upgrading phones lol

If you buy the phone outside of Koodo then you aren’t required to change your plan, that would be correct.

As for 5G, there are 5G specific plans that guarantee 5G speeds and connectivity.

You may from time to time get 5G on your new phone on the plan you have now, it just won’t be guaranteed since it isn’t a “5G” plan.
