I purchased a U.S. roaming talk booster.

When attempting to make calls from within the U.S. I get a recorded error message saying you don’t have a U.S. roaming talk booster in place.

I checked my account online and have lots of unused U.S. minutes.

How can this problem be fixed?

Are you a prepaid customer?

If so, your U.S. roaming talk booster add-on may be impacted as per the message below:

As of February 22nd, 2022, United States (U.S.) carriers have started turning down certain 3G/HSPA networks. As a result, customers using U.S. roaming add-ons will be impacted by differences in coverage or service quality (including 9-1-1 calls) when roaming in the U.S.

Customers may also experience changes to services such as welcome messages, voicemail notifications, usage notifications for voice, notifications when trying to make an international call as well as the ability to set up voicemail while in the U.S.

This shutdown will not impact your service in Canada.

Long distance, travel and roaming on Prepaid

Prepaid roaming in the US only works in limited areas dominated by T-Mobile.  AT&T has terminated “classic” voice & messaging services and now requires VoLTE compatibility.

VoLTE is not yet supported by Koodo prepaid. So even if your handset supports it, you can’t handshake properly with Koodo thru AT&T.

Highly questionable for Koodo to be selling roaming talk and text boosters given these circumstances.

Yes I am a prepaid customer.  My phone is only 2 or 3 years old so 3G should not be an issue.
My mobile networks settings are:
data roaming - off (no U.S. data booster purchased)
network mode - gsm/wcdma/lte auto
access point name - koodo sp
network operators - select automatically (picks T-mobile)
Tried turning VoLTE off/on but made no difference.
Also my wife has a Koodo prepaid account with U.S. talk booster and she has no problem making calls.  We compared mobile network settings and they appear to be the same.
How can I contact a Koodo representative directly?

You can schedule a callback using Koodo Assist prepaid. Unfortunately, there is no direct phone number to Koodo. A Koodo representative should be able to answer any questions you have.
