Questions about travel passes

I will soon be travelling to the Bahamas for a week, and it looks like the Easy Roam Caribbean Travel Pass is my best option ($60), rather than paying $18 per day.  The instructions say to “text CAR7PASS to 7626” to activate the pass.  Just to test it out, I typed in 7626, but without the CAR7PASS code, as I’m not ready to activate the pass right now.  But immediately I received a reply:  “Koodo Welcome to USA! You do not have Easy Roam.  Pay per use rates without a travel option are $1.60/voice minute, etc etc”   What have I done??   I am still at home in Canada but does Koodo think I’m in the US?  How do I undo this immediately and make sure I am not getting roaming charges before I even leave Canada?  Please walk me through what steps I need to take.

Don’t worry about it :) That’s just a form message and you won’t be charged. And even if you get charged for some unlikely reason, reply back here once you receive your invoice and we can flag a rep for you to reverse that 😊

Happy travels!

OK, thanks for the prompt reply, that’s a relief.  So when I’m actually ready to activate my 7-day pass, do I just go back to that text I received and reply with CAR7PASS?

A couple of other things--even though I only need the pass for the 7 days  that I’ll be in Bahamas, it says something about 30 days--what’s that all about?  Do I need to do something on my phone when I get back home?

And finally, while I’m in the Bahamas, I’ll be travelling with a friend but we are staying in different rooms and won’t necessarily always be going to the same places together.  He has a Canadian phone number as well.  Is there anything we need to do on our phones to ensure we can easily communicate with each other--for example, add an extra digit before the number?   Likewise, if we have to contact a business/tour operator in Nassau, is there an extra digit we have to dial before the local number?

Hi @Yelsew

Once you add the Travel pass, it will stay 30 days on your account, after which it will drop. You can add it before 1 day or the same day, before your departure, and you should get the confirmation that it was added and the add on should also appear in self serve.

The 7 day will start counting from the moment you start using the services in roaming. Once you return, you don’t need to do anyhing, as the Travel Pass add on will drop at the end of the 30 day period.

You would need to dial +1 in front of the 10 digits phone number to call Canadian phone number.

if you wish to call numbers in Bahamas, +1 is required in front of the 10 digits number.

You just send that code to 7626 as per normal, regardless of what messages you got from it.

It is a 7 day long pass that is active for 30 days. It means that you have  a 30 day period where once you start using it, it will run for 7 days in that period. You don’t need to do anything once you’re back in Canada.

I would add “+1” just to be safe, but that should be all if you wish to call. Nassau also follows the North American calling standard, so its country code is also 1, and you’d at most dial “+1” although I’ve only ever just dialed “1-number” for any number in the North American calling standard.

There is no   +  symbol on my phone keypad, just 0-9 as well as   #  and  *    Do you mean just the digit 1 followed by ten digits?

You press and hold “0” for one second to enter “+” when dialing.

I never knew that!  Thanks for the tip!

I prefer it because you don’t have to worry about “011” or “01” or “11” or anything like that. It’s universally “+” - “ country code” - “number”

I was just about to add my Easy Roam Travel Pass ($60) as discussed here a few days ago, but now I’ve discovered something else called International Voice Roaming:

“Travelling? Your Koodo phone needs this free feature to make or receive calls or to use text services while roaming outside of Canada or the United States. Make sure it's on your account before you leave, even if you've added Easy Roam.”

It’s apparently free, but I’m confused.  Do I really need to add this before purchasing Easy Roam travel pass?  Doesn’t the travel pass already include the ability “to make or receive calls or to use text services while roaming outside of Canada or the US”?   Can someone advise me on this, please?

Hi there,

The add on is so that you can actually use calling features while roaming. Without it, you wont be able to call on a network you're roaming on.

All that the travel pass is is pre-purchased days of Easy Roam. So koodos system will be notified you're roaming, however, it will recognize you have the pass and not charge you for the usage if you already have it.

It does not contain the features itself that enable you to Roam. The two additional features that are required are Easy Roam INTL and the International Voice/Data Roaming feature you described.

It means it needed to be added so that the function is on to use.  basically you need it to make roaming work.   But to use it, you need a roaming plan like the Travel pass or regular Easy Roam, or pay per use roaming

Thank you, Oliver and Dennis.  It was just by random chance that I happened to come across the blurb about International Voice Roaming.  It would have been nice if Koodo had clearly explained that in the part about Easy Roam travel passes, unless I missed seeing it.  Sounds like the travel pass would have been useless to me without first adding International Voice Roaming?   I don’t think anyone mentioned that earlier in this forum discussion.

Typically when you enable Easy Roam, the free International Voice Roaming add-on is automatically added for you

I tried to post a follow up question a few hours ago but it disappeared, so will try again. We are now in the Bahamas, both of us requested the $60 travel pass (CAR7PASS) before leaving Canada. But we both received messages from Koodo saying that we are now on Easy Roam and will be charged $18 per day. This is NOT what we chose--as I said we both registered for the 7 day $60 pass, so why did we get this message?  I thought we were going to have a worry-free week.

Hi @Yelsew, the email/SMS notification is just a generic message to let you know you’re roaming and does not take into account your specific roaming package. If you’ve added the pass and you’re in an eligible destination, you will be billed accordingly.
