Long-term business trip: Keeping 2 lines active for SMS reception abroad

Hello Koodo Support team,

I currently have 2 active lines on my account. I am traveling abroad on a long-term business trip (outside of Canada/US).

I intend to keep using these numbers when I return to Canada, so I need to preserve them. However, while I am away, I also need the ability to receive incoming SMS messages for communication with various organizations.

Because I need to receive SMS, the standard "Seasonal Hold" is not an option for me, as I understand it suspends all services.

I am looking for the most cost-effective solution to:

  1. Keep both numbers active with a minimal monthly fee.

  2. Receive incoming SMS while roaming internationally without triggering the daily "Easy Roam" charge.

  3. Ensure that I do not lose the numbers.

Could you please advise if there is a basic "starter" plan available for this purpose?

Thank you for your assistance.

Incoming SMS is free internationally; disable data/Voicemail, enable Airplane mode + Wi-Fi for no Easy Roam trigger (pings alone can charge).

Keep lines on your cheapest plan (prepaid starter ~$10/mo if switching works) to avoid losing numbers; check Self Serve for options.

I would not do prepaid as Robert describes, they do not work internationally. They only work in canada and the USA.

You can receive international sms for free while travelling with the postpaid starter plans. You will have to schedule a call with a rep before you leave to change to these but they start at $15 per month. They cant be changed to in self serve.

The details of the plans can be found on koodo's website, but to avoid roaming do not use data, send a text, make a call, or check the voicemail.

Thank you for your advice. I am already outside Canada and my only way to contact a company representative is through this community. That is why I wrote here. I will wait for a response from a company representative.

I prefer not to switch to a prepaid plan. I have auto-pay set up. I need a plan that may not include internet, calls, voicemail, and other paid services, but something like SMS only or a minimum rate specifically for such cases, which is not listed on the website.

So you can schedule a callback still with a rep and not be charged to your canadian number. This is as long as you only use the service for the scheduled call. You can schedule the call through koodo assist here: https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help

Alternatively, you can private message a rep on koodos social media pages Facebook and X (twitter). The correct profiles can be found by clicking the associated logos at the bottom of this page.

I normally would recommend you get the help here, however reps on this platform cant change your plans for you, their abilities are limited. I suggest you schedule the call or reach out through social media and a rep can change the plans.

If you don't have a Tab with Koodo, another option is to port to a VoiP carrier and use the numbers on WiFi while traveling overseas. When you are back to Canada you can port back to Koodo for better signal reception and quality .

To clarify, to prevent any roaming or easy roaming charges, it is completely in your hands based on your usage and settings.  Koodo will only charge you roaming when you when use data, talk, or send any text.  Data leakage is the most common accidents when incurring roaming charges non-purposefully.  But you’d be surprised that sometimes people will accidentally use talk, voicemail, or even send an accidental text
