International Roaming

Matt Frepp

I’ll travel to Europe shortly and understand that roaming will cost me $15 a day. What is not clear is this: When I call a number in Europe, is it the same as if I would call from Canada? Same charges apply on top of the $15? And I have to dial the country code, area code and phone number?

And if somebody in Europe calls me on my Canadian cell-phone number, what if any charges will apply? To them? To me? Do they have to call my number starting with the US-Canada country code? 001 in Europe.

Any clarification much appreciated.

thanks

Matt

It works like this:

You can call the country where you are and Canada at the regular cost (which, if you have unlimited minutes, means for free).

Same applies for receiving calls: you can be called from anywhere in the world at your regular per minute fee (presuming you have unlimited minutes, for free).

The ones who call you just pays the regular fee because your number doesn’t change - it would hardly be fair for them to be exposed to a sudden higher fee because they weren’t aware you were abroad :)

However you can’t call OTHER countries, even in Europe for free, those would be seen as calling abroad and you’d pay the regular fee to call from Canada to that country.

Oh as for your question about how to call: just dial any number as + (country code) (area code) (number)… that should work. If you call Canada, it would be +1 xxx xxx xxxx

However, if you call some countries like The Netherlands, you might need to leave off the zero in the area code. For example a number like 012 3456789, you’d need to dial the number as +31 12 345689.

thanks Sophia. Much appreciated. Just one thing isn’t yet clear. Say I’m in Germany. Somebody in Germany calls me on my Canadian cell, dialing 001-416-xxx-xxxx. What charges apply to them? Charges because they call “overseas”? Or none? Or is it impossible to say as it depends on their plan?

Callers from Canada don’t pay anything extra, that’s understood.

thanks again

Matt

They'd be calling a Canadian number and be charged accordingly, regardless of where that phone is when the call is received.

You are better off taking a prepaid via eSIM preferably and keep the canada SIM active in case you receive important calls. This option is going to be cheaper and people won’t having issues calling your number.
