Incoming text messsages while abroad and starter plan

Hey all,

I feel like I know the answers to these, but the Koodo website does not provide direct answers.

  • If I am on a postpaid plan, let’s say the 15$ starter plan, and travelling abroad for months at a time, will I get charged anything for receiving text messages? My only needs while abroad are to occasionnally receive text messages for 2FA purposes, and to keep my phone number.
  • I’m currently on a postpaid plan, the same plan I was on while paying back my tab. My tab is now paid and cleared. How come I can see the 15$ starter plan when I am NOT logged in, but I don’t see it when I am logged in? Do I have to call or go in-store to get the BYOP plans, even though it says Available Online Only?

Thank you in advance for the help.

For some reason the starter plans specifically cannot be made available via self serve, (possibly due to the 3G speed limitation). You will need to contact koodo to switch to one of these plans. Receiving text messages while abroad is completely free. Make sure you turn off cellular data completely though, (not just data while roaming), so you don't get billed for data leakage.

In addition, you can also activate Easy Roam. That way you can be certain you won't get a huge bill in case you do use some data.

In most cases you probably should keep your phone off and only switch it on when you desperately need it. Most 2fa can be switched to an Authenticator app, which is actually even safer than SMS and won't cost you anything.

Also, be aware that the overage of calling after the 100 minutes is 70ct/min even in Canada, so I shudder to think what it would be if you had to make a call abroad.

Just some pointers 😊 Happy travels!

Thanks a lot for the quick replies!

For the record, I always use a local SIM card while abroad for the data. I will only be putting my Koodo SIM card back in when I need to receive a 2FA number.

I am aware of the Authenticator app and I use it as much as possible, but I do have to deal with quite a few websites or apps that only work with SMS 2FA, unfortunately.

So I believe I will call Koodo to get that starter plan and hopefully I never forget to turn off cellular data before putting my Koodo SIM back in! :P

Thanks again guys!

Hi,

I am currently travelling In Europe and had put my account on seasonal hold but had to reactivate my number during my travel to get some OTPs for logins. I have reactivated my account but still need to be abroad for next few months. Wondering if I will be able to get my incoming texts? I don’t see an option to add International Roaming Add on in my account?? Can someone pls help! Urgent. :)

Thanks in advance.
