Is there anyway to remove the roaming option? I don't want to be charged $14 every day my son uses his phone in America when he only uses it for a minute or two.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a sure way to prevent roaming, except by removing the SIM card altogether before the trip.
There might be workarounds such as disabling roaming on the phone itself and removing all roaming add-ons in self serve, but I have heard that data leakage etc can still seep through.
