Easy Roam PayPerUse On By Default?

I recently travelled outside of Canada.  Whenever I entered another country, I would get a Koodo pop-up reminding me of the pay-per-use charges and recommending Easy Roam.  I did not make/receive any voice calls and only sent one text when my flight home was delayed.  I was surprised to find a $16+tax charge on my Koodo phone bill.  Further checking my no-charge add-ons included “Easy Roam US - PayPerUse Access On” and “Easy Roam INTL- PayPerUse Access On”.

I do not recall adding these features nor would it have occurred to me that these features meant a single text message would activate Easy Roam - the Koodo documentation on Easy Roam talks about enabling it through Self Service.   Has anyone else experienced this unexpected large charge for a single text message?

Easy Roam is a feature on by default on new accounts.
It charges the full $14/$16 at the first sign of sending a text, making or answering a call, or using data and then allows you to use your plan freely for the rest of the day.

Is this “on by default” documented anywhere?  The closest I could find was https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/easy-roam?srsltid=AfmBOoqslWpIemg8T0sLT4N83dG7qIBUKwjjXIrVHZRzvPLJz9wsnf9e which implies that I need to enable Easy Roam in Self Service.

I found the text messages that I received when I entered a roaming area  and see that they state that “You have Easy Roam with a daily charge of $16.”  Clearly I did not read the messages carefully - my excuse is landing very early  in the morning after a long overnight flight with little sleep.

As a postpaid customer, US roaming is already included in your plan. However, international roaming is not. To enable international data and voice roaming, you will need to add the respective add-ons in self-serve. If you wish to disable international roaming, remove these add-ons.

The roaming add-on generally is added at the time of activation. You could check your service agreement in self-serve to see  if that is the case.
