Dowgrading a prepaid plan on line

I will be traveling for several months and would like to retain my phone number for when I return. I’d like to downgrade my current prepaid plan to a cheaper plan however the self serve options only offer higher priced options. I know there are cheaper options that the one I am on because we have three phones that are all on koodo prepaid.  It would appear that koodo claims to allow downgrades for prepaid plans but does not offer them as options on the self serve menu (and since there is no customer service to call then there really is no downgrade options). I’ve checked the “legal” section and there is no mention of not being able to downgrade so is this an issue for the CRTC to address?

Please explain where to of how to access the lower priced packages through the self serve options. I would like to downgrade but see no cheaper options. Thank you for any assistance.

EDIT - just to further clarify, I am currently on a prepaid plan. I would like to downgrade it to a lower plan. The self serve options shown when I select “Change Plan” are only more expensive than my current plan but Koodo claims to have a $19.00 prepaid option. They even recommend downgrading to it for people such as my self who are traveling for extended periods but don’t want to cancel and lose their phone number. I have three phone plans in my home, all prepaid with Koodo and all three show upgrade plans but not downgrade plans. Koodo claims I can downgrade at any time on prepaid so where can I downgrade.

Thank you for those that have attempted to assist. It is appreciated!

Hi there,

within self-serve on postpaid majority of the plans you see there will be priced relative to what is currently in market (based on what is being sold currently on the website). These are priced competitively with other providers. Prepaid generally is much cheaper but with it you do also lose a lot of features and benefits that come with postpaid.

If the in-market pricing is higher, generally plans that are offered to existing customers on postpaid may be slightly lower priced due to loyalty or roughly the same.

This is also different for if you’re on a contract term or if you own the device. If you own the device, you will have access to bring your own device plans which are generally much cheaper. If you’re on a contract term, you’re limited usually to whatever is in market and are applicable for.

Your options to lower the price on postpaid are usually to either schedule a callback with their loyalty team to see if they can budge at all or offer any credits. Besides that, you can wait for cheaper plans to make an appearance in self-serve though it may take a while for cheaper ones to show. You can also go and switch to prepaid if you want to, though you do lose some benefits and if you have a contract you have to pay off both the tab and bonus.

Are you on a prepaid plan?

If not, you need to sign up for a prepaid plan as it is run independently from koodo.  Then you can port your postpaid line to the prepaid account.
